GOA Files Blockbuster Brief Before The U.S. Supreme Court! - Tuesday, February 12, 2008 Gun Owners of America filed its brief yesterday before the U.S. Supreme Court in defense of Dick Anthony Heller, who was denied the right to own a gun in the nation's capital as a result of the draconian gun ban which exists there.
In this hard-hitting brief, GOA takes aim at the weak arguments put forth by both the DC government and the Bush Administration. But more than that, GOA examines the favorable text and context of the Second Amendment in great detail, while also documenting the pro-gun history that formed the backdrop of its inclusion into the Bill of Rights.
The GOA brief even presents the greatest reason for the right to keep and bear arms, stating that "the Second Amendment right is to be exercised as a last resort to guard against tyranny."
GOA's Executive Director, Larry Pratt, has hit the airwaves recently, appearing on many talk shows and in newspapers to differentiate the GOA approach from the sullied road the President has taken. Pratt, along with other GOA spokesmen, has argued that the "bomb" which Bush's Solicitor General dropped last month (when he submitted his brief) would destroy the Second Amendment.
After all, the Bush administration's approach is that any and all guns can be controlled or banned if a federal court finds that to be "reasonable."
The GOA approach differs from many of the briefs that are being submitted to the high Court. For example, one brief which is being submitted by several legislators highlights Congress' position on the Second Amendment over the years. This can be a useful approach, to be sure.
But while the congressional brief concedes that the DC Council may have gone too far, i

MORE BLOOD ON HANDS OF 'GUN FREE ZONES' EXTREMISTS AT OMAHA MALL - Monday, December 10, 2007
NEWS RELEASE
MORE BLOOD ON HANDS OF 'GUN FREE ZONES' EXTREMISTS AT OMAHA MALL, SAYS CCRKBABELLEVUE, WA – Eight more innocent Americans have been sacrificed on the altar of political correctness at Omaha’s Westroads Mall this week, and the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said today that the real outrage of this crime is that it happened in a “gun free zone” where law-abiding private citizens are disarmed by mall rules and state statute.
“In the wake of this horrible crime,” said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb, “gun control extremists are already demanding more useless gun control legislation. A prohibition on firearms at Westroads Mall did not stop Robert Hawkins, but it did give him a risk-free environment in which to unleash his rampage.”
Gottlieb, co-author of the recently released America Fights Back: Armed Self-defense In A Violent Age, said the common link between virtually every mass shooting in recent history in this country is that they all happened in so-called “gun-free zones” such as shopping malls and college campuses. He and co-author Dave Workman detail the colossal failure of this “Gun Free Folly” in their new book.
“What happened at the Westroads Mall can happen anywhere that political hysteria results in victim disarmament,” Gottlieb stated. “Blaming firearms for this crime is like blaming cars for drunk driving. The argument doesn’t wash. Published reports all suggest that Hawkins was troubled and had emotional problems, and he reportedly had a felony drug conviction on his record which prohibited him from owning firearms. This proves that restrictive gun laws do not prevent determined perpetrators from getting their hands on guns, but they do prevent law-abiding citizens from having the tools to defend themselves.
“Remember that a similar shooting at Salt Lake City’s Trolley Square

CCRKBA URGES SENATE TO WITHHOLD SULLIVAN CONFIRMATION AT BATFE - Tuesday, December 04, 2007
NEWS RELEASE
CCRKBA URGES SENATE TO WITHHOLD SULLIVAN CONFIRMATION AT BATFEBELLEVUE, WA – After due consideration, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms strongly encourages the U.S. Senate to reject confirmation of Michael Sullivan as director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives until he demonstrates responsible leadership.
While we have admired Mr. Sullivan’s no-nonsense opposition to attempts by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and others to gain sweeping access to sensitive BATFE firearms trace data, we are alarmed at what appear to be significant abuses of authority by BATFE agents under his command. The BATFE is an agency in serious need of reform, and we are not confident Mr. Sullivan can accomplish such reform, based on agency conduct under his term as acting director.
While these abuses were not started by Sullivan, he has not taken any action to stop them. In fact, he has publicly defended these abuses. The U.S. House of Representatives has rebuked the BATFE, yet Sullivan still refuses to lead the BATFE in a responsible manner.
“We have given Mr. Sullivan plenty of time to demonstrate reasonable, even-handed, and responsible leadership,” said CCRKBA Executive Director Mark A. Taff. “We find his performance to date wanting.”
The only way gun owners can support Sullivan’s confirmation, Taff said, is if he clearly and publicly details the steps he will take to stop the abuses at the BATFE, and begins to implement said policies immediately. Until that happens, we fully support the indefinite hold on his confirmation, and encourage President Bush to revisit his decision to nominate Mr. Sullivan.
America’s firearms community will remember those Senators who choose to support a continuation of the abuses at the BATFE by confirming Sullivan, Taff stated. The

The facts on crime, guns, and how the free market works. - Tuesday, December 04, 2007
The facts on crime, guns, and how the free market works.
- “John Lott has released another amazing book.” – Ann Coulter
- “John Lott shoots holes in the gun grabbers.” – Alan Gottlieb
- “John Lott nails it.” – John Fund, columnist Wall Street Journal
If you want to understand economics and how it can explain everything from why crime fell during the 1990s to why campaign finance laws entrench incumbents and reduce voter turnout to why the same meal in restaurants cost more for dinner than lunch, Freedomnomics is the book for you. It shows why claims in Freakonomics (used in over 1,000 economics classrooms every semester) that concealed handguns don't work, everyone from real estate agents to doctors are cheating people, and abortion lowers crime are wrong.
- “Lott demonstrates how free market principles produce the greatest success . . . This book is essential to those who seek to understand liberty.” – Edwin Meese III, former US Attorney General under President Reagan
- Lott shows that “gun locks and gun self-storage laws lead to more deaths, for the obvious reason that if the owner can't get to his gun in time, the beneficial effect of having a gun is lost.” – Ann Coulter
- “[Freedomnomics] busts anti-free market myths and will give you the politically incorrect truth about gun control and many other issues pertinent to America today.” – The American Hunter
- “Freedomnomics provides a welcome antidote to the oversimplifications and shortcomings of Freakonomics. John Lott has an unusual knack for overturning conventional wisdom with good economics. In doing so, he ta

SAF Engages in Worldwide Struggle Against Gun Grabbers - Tuesday, December 04, 2007NEWS RELEASE
SAF Engages in Worldwide Struggle Against Gun GrabbersThe Second Amendment Foundation and the World Forum on the Future of Sport Shooting Activities (WFSA) met in Palermo, Italy, on October 4 and 5, 2007, to plan for a looming battle over global gun control.
SAF joined the WFSA in 2006. The WFSA was formed in 1997, and is an officially recognized United Nations non-governmental organization, or NGO. SAF was represented by Julianne Gottlieb. The WFSA has 38 members including most of the major hunting and sport shooting organizations and the firearms and ammunition manufacturer associations. The WFSA Board meets twice a year.
In two days of meetings the WFSA Executive Committee evaluated the various threats to the international firearms community. These include the United Nations, the European Union, changing environmental regulations, regional groups such as the Organization of American States, dedicated special-interest anti-gun groups, and, in addition, international airlines which are resisting the carrying of hunters’ firearms.
The WFSA Executive Secretary for the Americas, Thomas Mason, reviewed for the group the United Nations’ extensive future program on “small arms and light weapons”, its term for firearms. The UN will have eight weeks’ worth of conferences and meetings on firearms and ammunition in 2008. These include a Group of Government Experts (GGE) on international regulation of ammunition and also a major international conference in New York in July.
“The biggest challenge we face internationally is the so called ‘Arms Trade Treaty’, or ATT. The UN will have an ATT Group of Government Experts meet for almost four weeks in 2008 to lay the groundwork for a future treaty,” said Mason. The actual treaty drafting process will probably start in 2010 and might take up to three years. The WFSA will be present at these 2008 UN

Mall Shooting Fails to Reveal Mall's Gun-Free-Zone Status - Tuesday, December 04, 2007Media Coverage of Mall Shooting Fails to Reveal Mall's Gun-Free-Zone Status
Thursday , December 06, 2007
By John R. Lott, Jr.
The horrible tragedy at the Westroads Mall in Omaha, Neb. received a lot of attention Wednesday and Thursday. It should have. Eight people were killed, and five were wounded.
A Google news search using the phrase "Omaha Mall Shooting" finds an incredible 2,794 news stories worldwide for the last day. From India and Taiwan to Britain and Austria, there are probably few people in the world who haven’t heard about this tragedy.
But despite the massive news coverage, none of the media coverage, at least by 10 a.m. Thursday, mentioned this central fact: Yet another attack occurred in a gun-free zone.
Surely, with all the reporters who appear at these crime scenes and seemingly interview virtually everyone there, why didn’t one simply mention the signs that ban guns from the premises?
Nebraska allows people to carry permitted concealed handguns, but it allows property owners, such as the Westroads
